Benchmade Triage 915 ORG

The Benchmade Triage 915-ORG is from the Black Class or “extreme duty” series of knives geared toward professionals. This knife was specifically created with first responders in mind and contains three essential tools in a compact design.

The primary tool on the 915 is its modified sheep’s-foot blade. This blade profile gets its name from its original use: as a tool for trimming sheep hooves. The quickly downward sloping tip of the knife has a blunt geometry designed so that livestock wouldn’t get injured in the grooming process. This shape is likewise suitable in rescue situations where injury from stabbing could occur.

Made from N680 the broad blade on the knife has a high flat grind that considerably thins out the .130″ stock. Hardened between 57-59 Hrc it will hold a keen edge. Coupled with a slight belly and over-all length of 3.5″, the 915 is a great slicer. Deployment is achieved via dual, ambidextrous thumb-studs. The pivot is very smooth thanks to two large phosphor bronze washers.

On opening the tang meets Benchmade’s AXIS lock. The lock up is fairly solid with a marginal amount of blade play. The locking pin is equally accessible from both sides of the handle for easy disengagement.

The Secondary tool is a hook shaped safety cutter. This is nested in a cut-out flush with the interior 420J, stainless liners. A small ball bearing detent is used to help hold the hook open and closed, however this sample didn’t have the spring needed so it just rattles instead (it will be going back for repair). The actual hook is very effective. A wide mouth feeds material in quickly and the 58-60 Hrc, 440C blade makes easy work of synthetics and natural materials with its razor like edge. The tool is opened with a single thumb-stud that sits at the same height as the scales. This helps to prevent accidental opening. A small jimped ramp for the index finger ensures the cutter will not close during use. Although all the features on the knife are ambidextrous, the safety cutter favors right handed users.

The last feature of the Triage is a glass breaker. Made from tungsten carbide, it will make quick work of tempered glass. This is molded into the reinforced resin back-spacer of the knife and protrudes from the pommel. Tungsten carbide is extremely hard but will also corrode so owners may want to keep an eye on it.

All components are held between skeletonized stainless liners clad in Orange G10 scales. The scales are quite thick allowing for a deep texture. The profile of the handle has a slight thumb ramp and finger grooves for forward or reverse grip. All of these features, including the back-spacer, have  jimping to improve traction. The knife feels a little flat in the hand but this is a decent trade off for its low, unobtrusive profile. That said, the over-all ergonomics are good.

For carry, there is an ambidextrous, tip up pocket clip and lanyard hole completing the features.

Everything considered, the 915 Triage is a great multi tool. Although designed with first responders in mind, it would also make an excellent all around utility knife. While the glass breaker probably won’t see much action, the safety cutter could be used for a variety of everyday task. Weighing in at 5.1 Oz you are getting a great EDC friendly package. Incorporating the safety cutter into the liner was an elegant solution for keeping the knife thin.

Aesthetically, the all matching hardware has a nice contrast to the orange scales, setting off the highly visible design. If orange isn’t to your taste there is a black scaled version. The blade can also be had with a BK (black) coating and/or in a partially serrated edge.
